Roofing and Maintenance
Renewing and Restoring Slate Roof
Kestral Builders restored this roof on a what used to be an old school, but now been converted into someone house, when we first had an initial look at the roof it was in a bad way and was leaking, I took my video camera and took a video of the main house and the main valley run, and show the customer exactly what I was looking at, the video showed that the valley was covered with felt and that it was in a bad state of repair.
Once we got the contract for the re-newing of the roof, the scaffolding was erected, and the beginning of the roof tiles was removed, on taking the slate of the roof there was a number of rafters rotted, we spoke to our client before we removed anything and showed them the rotted rafters. When we got the go ahead to remove and replace the rotted rafters, we proceeded with the stripping the old slate and renewing the rafters as we went along.
Once the valley was cleared, we laid down the Lead flashing to cover the hole valley. We then after making sure all the rafters were ok we placed a breathable membrane on the rafters, and then we put on the lats and Spanish Slate.
On the last course of slates we cut some detailed slate to make a nice pattern so that it would make a feature of it. On the ridge tile we bedded the ridge tile on with black coloured mortar to match the colour of the slate.
We also cut the lead flashing and made a detailed cut on the lead and made a feature on this as you will see
in the pictures below.
Below are some pictures of the roof before and after the roof was complete by Kestral Builders.

This section shows the roof as it was when Kestral Builders first viewed roof. As you can see the valley was laid with roofing felt only, which over the years deteriorated and when you touched the felt, it crumbled in once hand, therefore it was not really water proof.

On the right picture on the old roof what was hear was the old ridge tiles and was big and bulky, we and the customers agreed to put detailed lead flashing scalloped in a nice neat shape again giving the old building character and looked better than what it was. In fact our client not only said that they have a new Roof but it’s better than the old one, because of all these new features Kestral Builders made the roof better and the customer ware highly satisfied.
